abstract = "In this work we evaluated possible impacts of the aquaculture
activity on the water quality of Furnas hydroelectric reservoirs,
Minas Gerais, Brazil. Our main goal was to test the applicability
of Landsat Operational Land Imager (OLI) images to monitor
possible impacts from fish net cages. The study area for this
first application was the Furnas hydroelectric reservoir, located
at Minas Gerais State, Southeastern of Brazil. The dataset used in
this work comprises two Landsat/OLI images, one acquired during
summer (08/02/2014) and another during the winter (03/08/2014),
and limnological data was collected in situ by limnological
equipments. First, the OLI images were converted to top of
atmosphere radiance and atmospheric corrected to surface
reflectance. After this, a water mask was applied in the images to
extract the pixels of the reservoir. Finally, the k-mean algorithm
was applied in the images to identify the different water masses
inside the reservoir. The results of the classification were
compared to the limnological data. Our results showed that regions
with and without aquaculture activity presented differences in
some water quality parameters. These differences were detected in
the classifications of OLIs images, indicating the high potential
of OLI for monitoring the aquaculture activity in other Brazilian
reservoirs.",
